Thou art the Messiah, the Son of the living God

Thou art the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (συ ει ο χριστος ο υιος του θεου του ζωντος). Peter tells the truth about the Master but does not know the depth of this statement. In fact, she was professed by inspiration of God. Peter did not imagine Jesus as Messiah according to the thought of God, but according to the mentality of the Jews. Even so, Jesus respects his statement, and yet among the 44 beatitudes of the New Testament he dedicates one to Perdo: "Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah ..." In Peter's statement two crucial points for faith are present: the Messiah (the Anointed One) and also the Son of God. The term Son, in the Greek original, comes preceded by the definite article, indicating that Jesus alone is the Son by antonomasia, that is, by essence. From all eternity, He is the Son. Hence, this revelation could only really have come from the Father. The human being would not be able to understand it. A demonstration of Peter's misunderstanding, despite the proclamation of faith, comes at the end of the text, when Jesus said that he would suffer much and die from the elders, the high priests and the teachers of the Law, but that he would rise again in the third Day, Peter, manifests himself and, once again, demonstrates not knowing the type of Messiah that was Jesus. In Peter's two settings there is tremendous ignorance about the Person and mission of the Savior.

3. For his part, Jesus does not give up on the mission that he wishes to accomplish through him: "... you are Peter, and on this rock I will build." (Romans 8:14) My Church, and the power of hell can never overcome it "(Mt 16:18, Lk 22, 31-32, Jn 21: 15-17). Simon is called Πετρος, which is not the same thing as πετρα. Πετρος is translated as stone, but not as rock. The Greek language makes this differentiation, using πετρα to refer to the term rock. This means that it is not Peter the ROCK, but Christ. In this way, the word ROCK will always be linked to Jesus Christ and, because of Him, to FAITH, as a total adhesion to Him. The rock on which Christ built His Church is not Peter's human figure, but the unshakable FAITH in Jesus Christ as the "Messiah, Son of God," the God made flesh, the cornerstone of salvation. It does not say any form of faith, but the FAITH professed by Peter. This means that professing the truth about Jesus Christ requires participation in His reality. Hence Simon became also Πετρα (stone), with the mission to justify in the faith and to be visible head of the Lord's flock. Christ is the living Rock, and the baptized are "living stones in the spiritual building, which is Christ."

4. And the gates of hell shall not prevail over it (και πυλαι αδου ου κατισχυσουσιν αυτης). The term port designates security for one environment and does not attack the other. In this sense, not the door that will attack the Church, but the followers of Christ who must destroy the gates of everything that leads to death. If there is a reference to sheol, it also indicates a whole culture of death, of pride and corruption established in the midst of mankind and intended to remain as such, remaining "safe" according to the technique of manipulation, falsification and illusion of prepared persons For inhuman discipleship. The gates of hell will never prevail over the Church because the power of Jesus Christ acts in such a way in her that His disciples, through the gift of FAITH, as total adhesion to His Person and work, will be able to defeat all forms of evil chains Of this deadly world. Christ has already destroyed death with His Resurrection. We, as authentic disciples, will do the same. The gift of the Faith, the rock of the ecclesial foundation, will triumph with the help of the Spirit of God. No corruption will stand before men and women in love with Jesus Christ, the Absolute Truth.

5. The power of the keys was given to Peter especially. Jesus entrusted to Peter a specific authority: "I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven: whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven" (Mt 16:19). The "power of the keys" designates the authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church. Jesus, "the Good Shepherd" (Jn 10:11), confirmed this charge after his Resurrection: "Feed my sheep" (Jn 21: 15-17). The power of "on and off" means the authority to absolve sins, pronounce doctrinal judgments, and make disciplinary decisions in the Church. Jesus entrusted this authority to the Church through the ministry of the apostles and particularly of Peter, the one to whom he explicitly entrusted the keys of the Kingdom (CCC, 553). In Matthew 18:18, the power of the keys is also given to the other apostles.

A strong and affectionate hug.
